The Mouth of the Truth is an ancient large mask in marble, walled in the wall of the church of Saint Maria in Cosmedin in Rome in 1632. It represents the face of a faun with circular eyes and open mouth. Its name derives from an ancient tradition: who lent oath, inserting the hand he would not have been able to retire it if he said forgery. |
In Campo de’Fiori a market of groceries has been entertained since 1869. In precedence it had entertained representations, raced of horses and capital executions. On February 17, 1600 the philosopher Giordano Bruno was burnt to the fire, and his monument is now found at the center of the square. The evening is a popular place of meeting with many cafes and restaurants. Besides Campo de’Fiori is the only great square in Rome without churches. |
The form of the square corresponds to the form of a lengthened stadium with one side right and other curved. Three Baroque fountains adorn the plaza: the Fountain of the Four Rivers of Bernini at the center, the Fountain of the Moor and the Fountain of Neptune next to the extremities. The square is full the whole day and also the evening by tourists. |
At the center of the square one of the greatest obelisks in Rome raises, surrounded by fountains and lions that eject water. From the square three roads (The Trident) penetrate in the city: Street of the Babuino at left, brings to Spanish’s Steps, Street of Ripetta at right brings to Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, while at the center the principal road in Rome begins, Street of Corso with its many shops. |
In front of Pantheon, it takes the name from the nickname given by the Romans to the monument (the Ritonna), on the square one of the many Obelisks in Rome is found. |
It’s one of the most beautiful square in Rome. Bernini has planned the elliptic plant with the Colonnade, that was finished in 1667. On the fires of the ellipsis there are two fountains. In Saint Peter’s Square the obelisk of Eliopoli is found. |
At the feet of the Stair of Trinità dei Monti it takes the name from the embassy of Spain at the Holy See. In the plaza the Fountain of the Barcaccia is found. |
At the feet of the Capitol hill. To the south side of the rectangular plaza the imposing mass of the Victorian is erected, the National Monument to Vittorio Emmanuele II, that hosts the corpse of the Unknown Warrior. The western side of the plaza is busy from the Renaissance façade of Venice Palace, that was for a brief period papal building. In the years of the Fascism it became famous because from its balcony Benito Mussolini leaned out for his discourses. Today it entertains a museum. |
